The Greene County supervisors at their Feb. 24 meeting held the required public hearing on the proposed maximum property tax dollars for FY21 (beginning July 1, 2020). There were no public comments and the required resolution was approved.
The maximum property tax dollars for general county services was set at $4,485,973, a reduction of $45,012 ($45,012) from the current year. The maximum property tax dollars for rural county services was set at $1,766,991, an increase of $29,057 (1.67 percent) from the current year.
The board set the public hearing on the FY20 budget for Monday, March 9, at 9 am. Levy rates in the budget are $6.08 (per $1,000 taxable value) as the countywide levy and $3.40 (per $1,000) as the rural levy. Rural taxpayers pay both the countywide and the rural levy for a total of $9.48 (per thousand).
The supervisors approved an addendum to the contract with Boone County Probation for services for persons whose criminal sentences include probation not through the Iowa Department of Corrections.
The addendum transitions the program from the pilot project that began last July 1. The pilot project was set to serve up to 20 offenders. The addendum removes the cap, specifies that offenders sentenced in magistrate court are eligible as well as those sentenced in district court, and has an automatic renewal. The cost to the county has not changed – $8,515.18 – regardless of how many persons are served. Boone County Probation can add 5 percent to the contract rate if unexpected costs arise.
The board approved an installation agreement with SCI Communications Inc for enhanced security at the courthouse. Information was provided at the Feb. 20 meeting.
Angie Gingery and Amy Milligan updated the supervisors on plans for the Reunion Rendezvous planned by Jefferson Matters: Main Street as part of the Bell Tower Festival. The event will follow the same format as last year but will start at 11:30 am, before the festival parade is finished.
